fun things to do with the family while sheltering at homeWhen it’s not possible to go on family outings for an extended period of time, it can be a struggle to find creative ways to have fun at home together and bond.

While these ideas might not be quite as good as the real thing, finding ways to recreate outings and trips at home can help to mitigate the disappointment of a missed family trip and the frustration of being stuck at home.

Here are a few fun things to do at home with your family while sheltering at home to replace popular day trips and vacations.

  • Family Movie Night – Pop some corn, melt some butter, and turn down the lights in the family room. There are loads of movies available to stream, including brand new releases that you’ve been dying to see. For authenticity, you can create printed tickets and have someone run the concession stand. (Tip: the choice of movie could be a reward for the child who does the best job finishing schoolwork or getting chores done!)
  • Virtual Birthday Parties – Extended family and friends might not always be able to come over for a birthday party, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be included. FaceTime, Zoom, and other similar services are a great way to connect and include everyone you love in a special day.
  • Amusement Park at Home – If you’re missing a trip to an amusement park, it can be pretty disappointing. While it’s not a perfect replication, creating an obstacle course or some fun stations around your house. Visiting the “attractions” together can be a fun way to pass the day. Alternately, if you have a VR headset, you can take turns viewing first-person video of your favorite theme park rides.
  • Backyard Camping – Grab a tent, some sleeping bags, and hit the backyard for a campout. Roast marshmallows by the firepit. Take a hike around your neighborhood. Have your family campout with the comforts of home just feet away.
  • Beach Day Fun in the Sun – Put a sprinkler in the yard, set up a slip-n-slide, or fill up the kiddie pool beside the sandbox for a beach day at home. Pack up a picnic lunch and play frisbee and catch in the grass.
  • Virtual International Vacation – Video tours of popular tourist attractions can be a fun at home alternative to your family trip. Be sure to serve up a menu of local meals and treats and put on your best touristy gear for your vacation.
  • Character Day – If you were planning to visit a museum or historical site, try having a costumed character day that matches up with your outing plan. Or just dress as favorite characters and create the theme of the day around their backstory, including food, activities, and entertainment.
